Ian & Andrew’s Story

Turning early momentum into long-term financial security.

When Ian and Andrew first worked with us in 2015, it was to purchase their first unit. At the time, things felt okay financially. They were meeting their goals, had a solid savings plan in place, and were making progress, but they did not feel fully in control. There was no real sense of what the bigger picture looked like or what the next move should be.

The real turning point came later, when the couple reconnected with our financial planning team and sat down to define their goals properly. That conversation changed the way they thought about the future. Until then, retirement had simply felt like something that happened at 67, because that was what everyone did. Realising there may be a way to bring that forward, with a clear and focused strategy, was the lightbulb moment.

What had started as one property purchase grew into a much broader plan. Over the last ten years, our team has helped them build a strategy centred on financial security and strong investment performance within their risk tolerance. Along the way, we have supported them with lending for their first and subsequent properties, established and managed their SMSF, built a property within the fund, managed a diversified portfolio inside the SMSF, provided insurance advice, and guided the transition of their first home into an investment property. Since then, that property has been sold too, and they are now building a new investment property.

What has mattered just as much as the outcomes is the way the relationship has worked. As their own portfolio has grown, so too has the expertise available around them. Life is busy, and they deeply value having a team that can handle the complicated parts in the background, so they are not carrying that weight day to day.

Today, they have two investment properties and a share portfolio, without the stress that often comes with it. Everything is structured properly, runs smoothly, and feels almost set and forget. More importantly, they no longer feel like the future is something to wait and see. It is something being actively planned, managed, and built with confidence.

“One of the things I am most proud of is the positive impact we have been able to have on the financial security and freedom of so many people; many of whom we have helped get into such a strong financial position that they could leave the workforce in their 40s and 50s if they wanted to.”

Gareth Croy is the owner, founder & Managing Director of Your Future Strategy. He is also our current Director of Financial Planning. We spent ten minutes with him to find out a bit more about how he started his career and where the YFS idea was born.

Ian & Andrew’s Goals
Financial Security
Confidence and control over the future
When they first reconnected with our financial planning team, their priority was building genuine financial security. While they were saving well and making sensible decisions, they did not yet have a clear strategy guiding those efforts. Through structured planning across lending, superannuation, investments and property, we helped bring clarity to the bigger picture. Today, their finances are organised, their assets are working together, and they have the confidence that their future is being actively managed rather than left to chance.
Optimum Investment Performance
A portfolio designed to perform - without unnecessary risk
Strong investment performance was always important, but not at the expense of peace of mind. By establishing and managing their SMSF, building a property within the fund, and creating a diversified investment portfolio aligned with their comfort level, we helped ensure their investments were structured for long-term growth. Instead of chasing short-term opportunities, their strategy focuses on steady, disciplined progress that supports their broader financial goals.
Bringing the future forward
Challenging the assumption that retirement happens at 67
One of the biggest mindset shifts came during their first planning meeting. Like many people, Ian had always assumed retirement simply happened at 67 because that was the norm. Mapping out a clear strategy showed that the timeline could potentially look very different. With the right structures, disciplined investing and coordinated advice, the future they were working toward could arrive sooner than they had expected.
In their words

“I had honestly assumed retirement just happened at 67 because that’s what everyone does. Realising there could be a much faster, more focused path forward was a real lightbulb moment.”
